Around that time I gave up on the super fast dreams (for the time being) and instead fell in love with running again. With having FUN, which for me, is what this is all about.
Enter the mud-obstacle runs.
I LOVE a challenge, and I also love laughing my butt off as I’m chest deep in a swamp, unable to move my legs because they are so ridiculously stuck in the mud at the bottom of said swamp. There is something so rewarding (and hysterical) about facing obstacles you never DREAMED of taking on (like climbing over 8 foot walls or leaping flaming logs for fun! Each mud/obstacle race I do gets more and more challenging…and significantly more fun. That’s why this year I’ve decided to tackle one of the craziest ones yet:
The Spartan Beast.
I’m sure you’ve heard of the Spartan Race. (If you haven’t, click that link. Or better yet, watch THIS VIDEO for a mega dose of Spartan inspiration) They describe themselves as “pure primitive craziness that you’ll never forget!” Last year, my Running Partner in Crime and I ran the Carolina Super Spartan, and I will attest that it was indeed crazy, and I will never forget it. The Spartan race series has 4 levels of events that take place across the country. You can tackle a Spartan Sprint (3+ miles), a Super Spartan (8+ miles), the Spartan Beast (10-12 miles) and the Death Race, a ridiculous 48+ hour event only for the true bada$$ Spartans. Seriously , you know it has to be a race of epic proportions when the website is called, I kid you not, www.youmaydie.com .
What obstacles will you encounter at a Spartan race? Mighty good question! The answer: they aren’t telling. From the website: “You will get no course map to inspect. There is fire, mud, water, barbed wire, and occasionally Hell on Earth. There WILL be obstacles to catch you off guard. Curve balls, so to speak. Get over it. We’re here to rip you from your comfort zone. If you need a road map for each step of the way, then maybe this race isn’t for you. “
The Spartan Race community’s goal is to get you off the couch and throw you into some chaos. They offer daily workouts, weekly newsletters, and inspiring blogs to help you get to the finish line. While the race may seem incredibly intimidating and tough, the idea behind the Spartan community is that we can ALL overcome obstacles (literally and figuratively, if I can get over those walls you can too!) to achieve what we set our minds to. The Spartan races were created with the idea that working out does not have to be torturous, and instead can be fun, if only you approach it with the right mind set. While it is certainly not an EASY walk in the park, Spartan races have a 99% finishing rate. If you believe it, you CAN do it!
