I’m kind of picky.
Particularly with my food (don’t get me started on the recent chicken egg incident…or more who I found hiding in my egg), but also with my workout clothing You see, long gone are the days of people working out in sweats and cotton t shirts: athletic apparel is widely available in many sizes, styles, and price points. And with the availability of sports bras and capris at almost any box store, comes the need for athletes who really put their gear to work to discern the good stuff from the junk. Sweat wicking tech material is no longer a new technology, so for me, a company has to do something extra to really stand out and prove their product worthy.

I have been aware of YMX by Yellowman for a few years now. In fact, I had the pleasure of writing a review almost two years ago. But I was more than happy to revisit the brand and product when the opportunity was presented to me as a part of a FitFluential campaign. So I am pleased to be able to present you with a review of an athletic apparel company that does meet all of my picky criteria.
WHAT THEY SAY:
“YMX (acronym for YellowMan Expression) was launched in 2009 as an extension of the original, high-end tattoo clothing brand, YellowMan (founded in 2004). Built on an extensive library of original tattoo artwork collected around the globe, YellowMan offers collectible, limited wearable art prints. YMX offers multifunctional garments that bridge the gap between athletic and fashion garments. Featuring high-comfort, lightweight MadKool fabrics and detailed, original prints, YMX garments can be worn for athletic use, or for casual wear. As a matter of fact, because of the moisture-wicking properties of the fabric, many people wear YMX in both active and leisure activities without having to change!”
YMX was created by founder Peter Mui, with the intent of being wearable works of art. YMX makes clothing for running, cycling, yoga, skiing, and more. I was sent two items to review, a long sleeve top and a tank top, from the YMX by Yellowman Women’s line (FYI, there is a men’s line as well.)

WHAT I SAY:
Fabric: I wish there was a way for you to reach through your computer screen and FEEL this “MadKool” fabric. Not only is it incredibly soft and silky feeling ,but it’s so ridiculously lightweight. If YMX clothing was a feather, my Lululemon tanks would be a brick, THAT is how lightweight this material is. From an athlete point of view, this is incredibly useful not only for sweat wicking reasons (no one likes to be weighed down by an article of thick, soaking wet clothing), but it makes it incredibly easy to pack when not in use. That is a huge plus for me, especially when hiking or racing with an already full pack.
Design: I personally am not one for dull, boring workout apparel. I like mine to stand out, be unique, and as a bonus, make myself visible to oncoming traffic or other athletes for safety reasons. YMX by Yellowman designs do just that.
Performance: The clothing is indeed sweat wicking, as advertised, and let me proclaim once again how incredibly light weight it is! They are AMAZING for layering, as you can wear multiple layers without feeling bulky. Now, when I was first introduced to this company, my concern was that a piece of clothing so incredibly light weight was bound to rip, or not last very long. Well my very first piece of YMX from over two years ago is still in rotation in my workout gear, and not a rip, tear, nor fray to be seen.
Alas, with quality clothing comes price: the old saying simply is true, you get what you pay for. YMX clothing is certainly not cheap…both on their manufacturing and on their price tag. Ranging form $69 for a tank top all the way up to $178 for a jacket, they certainly are more expensive than something you would pick up at a box store. However, due to the quality of the product, as well as the uniqueness of each piece, I do believe they are indeed worth the investment.
Overall, I’m absolutely pleased with the new YMX pieces, and am happy to add them into my clothing rotation. I would recommend YMX to anyone looking for unique apparel that can handle anything from an easy day at the gym or the rigors of a day on the mountain.

I’ve never heard of the company, but those are some fantastic designs! Way out of my price range, but cool to look at nonetheless. I definitely like brighter to stand out when I’m running on the roads.
