Call me a nerd, but one of my favorite parts of going back to school is buying a new planner. An empty planner with 365 blank squares full of endless possibilities and adventures is exhilarating. In reality, it will be chock full of homework assignments, test dates and scribbles before the year is out, but when it’s new, it’s nothing but possibilities and dreams.
Monday, I made a super quick stop at Target before I headed in to my once a week work at the bar shift, where I came across this beauty. A paperback book sized blue planner, covered in bicycles. Cute, whimsical, and secretly motivational all in one little $3.50 planner. PERFECT.
I bought it, brought it to work, and started filling in all of the the known dates between August 1st 2010 and July 31st 2011 (we were really slow, I had a lot of time to kill). First day of school, last day of school, and all of the days off in between. Birthdays. Weddings. Anniversaries. And then came the fun part. Races. Irongirl. Myrtle Beach mini marathon. Myrtle Beach Marathon.
And that’s it.
Some of you “in the know” may have noticed I left Chicago Marathon out.
Ok confession time. Really, the ONLY good vibe I have coming out of this race right now is knowing I’ll get to see a hand full of my running moms. I love them! The rest of me is dreading Chicago. I’m under prepared (thanks to a good 2 months off from the ankle injury), and so darn sick of finishing a marathon “just to finish”. I’ve done that already. I’ve finished 4 of them, in 2 years, while having babies and going to school. I think I’ve made my point. One day , I want a good, strong marathon finish. One day, I want one in everyone of the 50 states. But that day isn’t going to be 10/10/10. And that’s not be being pessimistic , that’s me being real.
I am certainly training right now. In fact I’ve upped my training so quickly that I panicked a little when my alarm went off yesterday morning and the first thing I noticed was a tiny bit of pain in my ankles. (I proceeded to go back to sleep and decided to play it safe and take a rest day). I’m focused on regaining my fitness and having a good time while doing it. And while Runner’s World smart coach app says I can finish a marathon no problem with training in the next 9 weeks, I’m still (very) skeptical. Not that I’ll finish, I know I will. But that I won’t be cursing myself out for doing that race from mile 15 on.
And what’s more, I feel like a big fat running traitor. You see, I’ve been looking (eyeballing with lust?) at the brand new Myrtle Beach Triathlon which is being held in conjunction with the USAT Halfmax Championship in October (weekend before Chicago marathon). In addition to the 70.3, the race weekend offers a super sprint and what they call a “quartermax” (short on the swim, slightly longer on the bike and run than an Olympic distance) race. And I’m GIDDY over the possibility of doing my first Olympic tri (well, close enough) in my very own town.
I haven’t given up on Chicago yet. But at the risk of letting down my running mamas (because I love them and don’t ever want to do that!) I not so secretly would rather do the tri…
I’ve been looking to rekindle my passion for running, and it seems I’ve found it in the multi sport world. The thrill of something new, conquering things that currently intimidate me (swimming and cycling). I will always be a runner, no doubt about that. But perhaps triathlons and I are in the honeymoon phase. I get giddy over little things like doing a brick workout, or swimming just a little further in the pool. I love it, I can’t wait to get more. I sit here at the end of the day giddy for the next morning, so I can workout again.
I always laughed at my friends who joke that once you turn tri you don’t turn back. But I’m beginning to think they are right…
