Now, I’m not one of those jacked dudes with shiny six pack abs that come to mind when you think of Men’s Health Magazine. But I am a girl who is absolutely in love with obstacle course racing, and can never turn down the opportunity to earn a new race medal, Plus, the Urbanathlon appears to be different from every other “mud run” on the market…mainly in the fact that there is no mud.

Now, what exactly is the Urbanathlon? According to the website:
“The Men’s Health URBANATHLON is a three-city event series (New York, Chicago, and San Francisco) comprised of 9.5- to-11 mile endurance races that incorporate city landmarks and urban obstacle courses set on the streets of three of the largest cities in the U.S. Post race, the excitement continues at the Men’s Health URBANATHLON Festival, with DJ sets, food and drink, and tons of stuff from our sponsors to demo, sample, and take home.”
Being in New England, I have decided to run the NYC event, which will be held at Citi Field on October 26th. Having recently raced at Citi Field for the Spartan Stadium race, I’m intrigued by the idea of a ten mile race at that location.
Keep in mind, my OCR enthusiasts: this is not a mud run. It is advertised as a road race, with obstacles…and with only 10 obstacles over the course of 10 miles (according to the course map), that appears to be an accurate description. Some of the obstacles seem to be your run of the mill standards: monkey bars, walls, over/under/throughs, cargo nets, etc. But then there are others that are specifically”urban” themed (taxi’s, anyone?), a nice change from so much mud.

No burpees for failing obstacles here, however…and no skipping them either. According to the website:
” All obstacles must be completed in order to continue on with the race. Racers are free to work together to complete any of the obstacles. However, racers who cannot complete an obstacle will not be permitted to finish the race and issued a DNF. Race staff will be enforcing this rule on race day.”
It seems the Urbanathlon isn’t your typical weekend warrior fun run event. A certain level of fitness is required, as running ten miles alone is really nothing to scoff at, never mind adding in the strength and stamina required for the obstacles. My weakness? The monkey bars. I’m always capable of them on the playground, yet almost always fall off during mud runs. I’m hoping the lack of mud and water at the Urbanathlon will yield better results, because a DNF is certainly not what I have planned.
Not quite up for the entire distance? The Urbanathlon offers a relay option: relay teams consist of three team members; each member runs approximately one-third of the race. There will be transition areas at the beginning of leg 2 and 3 of the race, where relay team members will pass their team’s timing chip to the member running the next leg of the race.
Registration is currently open for all three locations, Chicago (10/19), New York (10/26) and San Francisco (11/24), and is currently $125 per city, per individual (a hefty price tag, but comparable to most larger OCR’s) or $200 for a relay team of 3. But hang tight…my friends at Men’s Health
