The other day I read a thread on a Facebook where one person asked a group of bloggers whether or not , if given the chance, they would want to work as a full time career blogger. The majority of people answered no, and the consensus seemed to be that they would “run out” of things to write about. This answer baffled me. Maybe it’s because I simply enjoy talking a lot, and this carries over to my writing. Or maybe it’s because I’m intrigued by, and in awe of, nearly every random thing that I come into contact with. Or maybe it’s because I find myself in the midst of exciting adventures and hilarious predicaments quite frequently, so I’ve always got a story to tell.

Remind me to tell you the story about the one time I ran a few miles through the snow in a robot cardboard costume.
Whatever the reason may be, I always have a lot to say, and I can’t imagine “running out” of things to write about. (No running pun intended here, heh.)
No, instead my problem is that it is more often than not, far too nice outside to be a full time blogger.
You see, I’m most productive on rainy days.
(Usually.)
I’ve been this way for as long as I can remember, even as a little girl. If I had a weekends worth of homework, the timing of its completion was based solely on the weather. Rainy, snowy, or gloomy? Chances are I’d finish my work Saturday afternoon. But if the sun was out, you could almost guarantee that I would be cramming the last of the homework in until just moments before bedtime, quite possibly with tears, while my parents lectured me about time management.
As an adult who has somehow found herself back in the world of written word, my homework is now in the form of articles and blog posts with deadlines of their own. And per usual, the procrastination factor is based upon the weather. I find it nearly impossible to sit down at my desk mid day when the sun is shining, and actually muster up anything resembling productivity. I try, but my mind wanders, my attention span waivers. It’s almost as if the great outdoors, even here in pavement Myrtle Beach, is beckoning, no, relentlessly BEGGING me to get outdoors.
So I go.
Most days, we hit up the (only) local trail for a 7 mile stint of tree-and-dirt happiness.
Other times, we head to the beach where I attempt to surf, laughing the whole time about how 10 years ago, I used to be pretty good at it. Key words: used to.
And some days, when it’s particularly beautiful out, I don’t find myself back in front of the computer until it’s about time for dinner, family time, shower, and bed. (Note: the lack of sun = an increase in productivity equation does NOT apply to night time. The little old lady that resides inside of my head ensures that I’m pretty useless after 7 pm, and fast asleep by 9. She also ensures that I enjoy things such as Necco Wafers, which Geoff assures me is “old people food” .) On these days, I do not write.
A string of these days in a row will leave me cramming in articles in until just moments before a deadline, quite possibly with tears, while I lecture myself about time management.
Then there are days like today, where the 35 degree chill and pouring rain makes the thought of heading outdoors seem downright miserable, painful even. Days like these make you WISH it would snow, because at least it’s pretty to look at. Regardless, on these days it is much easier to sit down in front of the computer and let the creativity flow. There is no beckon to run away into the woods. No urge to feel the warm sunshine on my face. Just a fresh (and usually cozy, I tend to opt for leggings and a hoodie as my work attire of choice on a rainy day), go-get-em attitude ready to knock out a few thousand words. And of course, there is never a shortage of things to write about.
Like in this case, when I wrote about writing on rainy days. See? There is ALWAYS something to write about.
The end.
I’m really glad you decided to become a blogger. Your enthusiasm and energy is clear in your writing and reading your posts in the morning make my desk job a little more bearable 😀
Unfortunately 1 degC (35 F) was exactly what I was running in last night, but at least the rain held off for me.
Also, love the surfing shots. I’ve never been, but recently discovered that there is such thing as surfing on the Great Lakes, so on it goes to my summer ‘to do’ list.
