Today I decided that I simply can’t sit anymore. I love that I have the opportunity to write from home; I hate how resentful my body has become at sitting in a chair. So I found myself a cardboard box that was coincidentally the exact height I needed (and by found, I mean I stole it from the cats…it was one of Geoff’s handmade cat houses), and made myself a stand up desk. Therefore, this will be the very first post I’ve ever written on my feet instead of my butt. We’ll see how it goes.
Now, on to the post.
In case the title didn’t give it away quite yet: I stole the idea for this blog post from another Heather. And perhaps “stole” isn’t the right word, but instead “borrowed”. Also, I’ve been waiting for a reason to use a ridiculous click bait title, and today was the day. (Sorry.) Also: the fire in the above picture has nothing to do with anything in this post at all. (Sorry again.)
Yes, this post was inspired by another Heather, Heather “Just A Colorado Gal” to be exact. One of my favorite fellow bloggers to read, her site is chock full of wander-lust-inducing photos, that almost always leave me commenting on her post “I WANT TO GO TO COLORADO!”. She’s an avid runner and athlete, and from what I’ve deduced from our strictly online friendship so far, a pretty kickass person.
Two days ago she wrote a post called “Come Out of Hiding“. Heather talks about how back in the hey day of blogging, everyone was quick to comment on everyone else’s posts. I remember when I first started this blog in 2009, I could write an entire 1,000 word utterly pointless essay on some commercial I saw on Nick Jr. and dozens of people would comment. Ahh the good old days, back when hashtags weren’t even a thing, half of us were still on Myspace, and most cell phones didn’t even have touch screens, never mind Instagram.
Someone break out my old lady social media cane. Before you know it, I’ll be shouting at people on Twitter to get off my lawn.
These days? Engagement between bloggers and readers doesn’t seem to happen as frequently. I mean, I know you guys are showing up, the page views don’t lie (I hope). But it seems to be the same handful of people who consistently leave a comment…if anyone comments at all. It also seems as our social media options keep growing, it becomes harder and harder to keep up with each other, even though our presence is seemingly everywhere. Where it was once “just” a blog, there is now Instagram, and snapchat, and email newsletters, and Facebook, and …the list goes on and on. It’s hard to keep up.
Don’t get me (us) wrong, we are very grateful that you show up to read what we write, even if you do so under the radar.
But Heather proposed, and I’m totally hopping on this bandwagon, a once per year “come out of hiding” post, where she asked her readers: “Who are you? Where do you live? Why do you like reading my blog?”
And frankly, I’m curious as well. Over the last 7 years this blog and I have both made some radical changes. I’d love to know who is still around since the early “Run Faster Mommy” days, and who are the new readers that I haven’t had the pleasure of getting to know yet. If you’re willing to share, comment below:
Who are you?
Where do you live?
How did you find this blog? (Was it my incessant self promotion on facebook? Was it the hernia surgery post? That thing is incredibly and surprisingly popular. Who knew!)
Why do you like reading my blog?
What sort of content would you like to see more of? To be 100% transparent, I maintain this blog for my own selfish purposes. I love to ramble and share my thoughts and experiences with the world. Writing is my non-running therapy. Buuuuuut I am genuinely curious if there is a majority vote on a similar “things you’d like to see more of”. And if so, I’ll do my best to accommodate.
So hey, thanks for playing! I genuinely look forward to the responses, and getting to know you better. And as always, thanks for reading!
