Early October I was sent a kick butt Sugoi Firewall 220 jacket to test and review. But in typical SC fashion, the second the jacket arrived, the impending fall weather reverted right back into high’s of 80 + degrees. Needless to say the poor jacket only made a hand full of appearances on the way to and from early morning aerobics class. And it was a shame, because this jacket is super cute.
(forgive me, for I was never, never meant to be a model, haha)
Finally, FINALLY, I woke up Saturday morning to go meet the group for a long run, and the little weather bug on my phone read 43 degrees. My first thought was “UGGGGHHH” (I really dislike the cold, hence I relocated from Vermont to the coast of South Carolina 8 years ago) and my next thought was “oooh my pink jacket!!!” I know, I know, my Michigan, Minnesota, Canada readers are laughing, 43 degrees is still shorts and tank top weather for you. But for us, well we run in 90+ degrees and 90+% humidity from April to October, so 43 degrees might as well be freezing. I mean, close enough, right?
OK , on with the review….
First lets start with how amazing Sugoi products are. Or should I say “Incredible” (the translation of “sugoi” in Japanese). If you’ve never run (and or rode/tri’d) in Sugoi, you need to start. Their products are absolutely top notch. And based out of Vancouver, British Columbia, these people know how to keep you warm and dry in ALL conditions.
The Firewall 220 Zip Jacket is very very thin, but will keep you very ,very warm. I’ll admit, being a chicken in the cold, I started out with a tank top, 3/4 sleeve running top, and the jacket. And then proceeded to sweat my a$$ off. Thank goodness at the 6 mile mark of the run, we met up with some more of the group in the parking lot, and I was able to shed the 3/4 length top. In just a tank top and the very think Firewall Zip, I was absolutely 100% comfortable in 40 degree weather.
AS far as protection goes, the Firewall 220 fabric is ranked an S3+ by Sugoi, the ultimate combination of layers that provide superior protection under any sort of weather conditions. This impressive layer, made of Firewall, a fabric group which introduces innovative progress to SUGOI’s elite softshell range, is a combination of layers to provide superior protection under the harshest of winter conditions. The Firewall 220 fabric is breathable, dry wicking, wind and water resistant. It’s made with a 100% Polyester face and back and 100% Polyurethane Laminate.
Instead of woven, the jacket is made with a high gauge knit . Result? A soft, QUIET material that wont make all the noise of your typical wind breaker type jacket (anyone remember walking down the halls in those old school wind pants? Swish, swish, swish, swish, haha!). It’s also stretchy (yes, that’s my technical term for it) , and thus does not restrict movement in anyway, which is a pain when you are riding or cycling.
And, while it was certainly not a downpour, on my way back to the car, in typical Heather fashion, I missed my mouth completely with the water bottle and drenched myself. The water just beaded up and ran right off of the jacket. Waterproof? Check!

The Sugoi Firewall 220 zip is a great addition to any runner’s wardrobe. It can be used alone as a jacket for those of us in more mile conditions, or as the outermost layer for those of you running or riding in the snowy, slushy, icy Northern tundras (I don’t envy you!) . Best of all…if the sun comes out and the temperature jumps 20 degrees? Tie it around your waist. It is so incredibly light weight it won’t hinder your running in the slightest.
So…you like what you see when it comes to Sugoi? Well my great friends at Outside PR have offered up a “Surprise” giveaway for my readers…
