Lesson #1 in dating a fellow athlete: It’s impossible to try and pull the “I just ran a really bad-ass race and therefore should be exempt from anything difficult for at least a few weeks” card when the person you are dating has way more bad-ass race experience than you do.
Now to give credit where credit is due (or in this case, place blame elsewhere), I’m certain part of that weight gain was the fact that I was training my wall-sitting-butt off, combined with teaching at least one group exercise class (if not more) every single day…to doing virtually nothing. I got really sick, I left my job (that’s a blog post for another day), and then I tapered for the Ultra Beast. My body probably went into shock, and I’m certain my caloric intake didn’t quite drop with the decrease in activity.
Now here in Brattleboro, the gym options are very, very few. I have been spoiled over the last few years, working in state of the art, massive, beautiful facilities. So when we joined our new gym yesterday, it was a feeling of “ehhh, this will do.” I mean, don’t get me wrong; it’s a well-kept, clean gym, and everyone seems very nice. It’s just older, and like I said, I’m just incredibly spoiled with brand new equipment (and lots of it). But still, I had neutral feelings about this place…until the front desk employee giving me the tour asked if I wanted to see “The Cage”, a newly added section to the gym. I said sure. We walked around a corner, through a door, and saw this:
I almost did burpees of joy.
Here I was, hoping and praying that our new gym would have a little corner where I could do some squats or mountain climbers or kettlebell swings without getting in everyone’s way, and instead of a corner I get an entire BOX.

So of course, we got right into it. A traditional upper body workout last night, and a WOD for me this morning. More upper tonight, and who knows what tomorrow. We are as giddy as kids on Christmas morning.
Eventually the excitment will die down (not likely, I love what I do!) and routine will form. And it will be time to focus on training for what’s next.
So what’s next?
Mighty good question. The “life” version of what’s next is too complicated for this blog, but I’ll certainly divert your attention to my training plans. Like the people who holiday shop in the middle of July, it’s time to focus on the 2013 season already. Time to get back to where I was. Time to shed this extra weight (physical and emotional), to regain strength, build a base, and when I feel ready, throw down the hammer.
2012 is certainly far from over, but it taught me a lot. I trained harder this year than I ever have before, and my race results are proof positive of that. I’ve got potential hidden in there. Not to be an olympian or a world class athlete or anything like that, but enough potential to compete. In what? Well that I’m keeping under wraps for now. But I’m hoping I finally have the drive and the focus to attack all aspects of my fitness. To try things new and out of my comfort zone. To set new PR’s…in running and beyond. And with the support and
heckling encouragement from my very own amazing squeeze/strength and conditioning coach, as well as a handful of amazing friends & companies I’ve teamed up with this year…I think anything is possible.
So,here’s to a fresh start. In so many more ways than one.
