P90 X…you’ve all seen the infomercial, with the crazy ripped new mom, and the old guy who is more buff than he was in the military, etc. Well, a bunch of my co-workers and local bar frequenters have started P-90 X together. They are on maybe week number two or three. I like to ask them, pretty much on a daily basis, if the beer they are drinking is Tony Horton approved and a part of the official P90X diet plan. Hey, what’s “family” without a little heckling, right?
But seriously, I have had this workout DVD set on my wish list since I first saw that grandma do a one armed push up. Today, while
heckling discussing the P90X with my coworkers, I contemplated out loud how I just wouldn’t have time to do it. OK, I would have time, but then I wouldn’t have time to run as well. It’s an hour long, 6 days a week program. I could just see Rich’s eyes rolling when I announce to him that once I return from a 3 hour long run he’s still on solo baby duty, because I’ll be tackling a 1 hour DVD. Ha!
The resounding group answer to my thought was “well you wouldn’t NEED to run if you were doing p90X” .
To which I replied, “but I LIKE to run”.
Them: “But, like, you wouldn’t HAVE to run, this would be enough of a workout”.
Me: ” Sooo…when I show up to my next marathon start line I can say ‘watch out everyone! I may not have run in months, but I’ve got killer biceps!’ how does that help me run 26.2 miles?”
More blank stares.
Me: “I don’t run to be skinny…I run because….never mind.” (obviously they didn’t’ read my blog about how running is making me fat)
I got “This girl is nuts” stares from all around.
I started seriously running when my oldest son was just shy of 3 months old. I ran simply to try and shed the baby weight. I will never ever forget the first run, post baby. I hadn’t been what I would consider an athlete in years, and I used my pregnancy as a PERFECT excuse to sit on my butt. So one day, I left the baby with Rich, and went for it. I ran/walked/struggled through a mile. It took me about 16 minutes. My face was red, I felt like I was having an asthma attack, and I got a huge blister on the back of my heel (yeah, from one lousy mile). I stumbled in the house, dizzy, and proceeded to puke my guts out. No joke. It was awful.
But the next day, I went out again. I despised the way my body looked and felt, and I wanted to fit into my pre-pregnancy clothes again. So I ran. And I ran the next day. And the next…and the next. And before I knew it, I was going further. There was less gasping and puking. Before I knew it, my clothes fit again, and I actually WANTED to run. I loved it. I loved the way it made me feel, and I hated the way I felt without it.
That was two and a half years ago. There has been another pregnancy/baby and a few spells without running since (some longer than others, thanks baby Kain!). I’ve loved running, hated running, and am back to loving running once again. I really can’t imagine my life without it. I could list the reasons I love to run, but I’m pretty sure 95% of you reading this are fellow runners, so I don’t need to explain to you, because you get it.
It’s those non runners, they just don’t’ get us, do they? It’s really too bad for them 🙂
today was 3.21 easy miles with the double jogger and both boys. 9 mile long run scheduled for Sunday, with a little UFC 100 satisfying my (not so) secret crush on GSP on Saturday night. I hope you all have a fantastic weekend! But before you go: A little Linky LOVE to start off your weekend:
