Richard Simmons, I love you.
No really, I love this guy. Some people think he’s crazy, I think he’s flippin awesome. Some find his energy obnoxious, I find it contagious. (really, you need to watch that video, he is a trip!)
I, like many people my age, remember my mom “sweating to the oldies” . Except instead of watching, I always joined in. I remember the classics(and still the moves to) “It’s my party and I’ll cry if I want to”, “Great balls of fire” and my favorite, the cool down to “Ain’t no mountain high enough”. Exercise back then wasn’t something I was concerned about, but I had fun dancing around the living room with my mom. Never, at the fresh young age of 10, did I imagine that 18 years later I would be channeling my inner Richard Simmons. Or, my inner “Heather Simmons”, a name bestowed on my post-baby #1- weight loss/running/healthy eating enthusiasm, by the fellow new moms in my September 2006 baby group. There was even a picture floating around with my face superimposed on Richards body, but luckily for you, I can’t find it, bahaha. But back to what I was saying.
I taught my very first fitness classes yesterday and today (two different groups) flying solo. Some aerobics, some weights, some resistance, and core. The last three I had no problem with, but the first? WOW. I was a nervous wreck. You see, the woman I was replacing had 20 plus years experience as an aerobics instructor. That woman could create an hour long routine full of the simplest moves to the most complicated combinations off of the top of her head, all while watching the class, doing the moves, and singing. Yes, she sang a lot. Never missed a beat, and if she did, you didn’t even notice.
I felt like a coach walking into a team mid season. Some of these participants have been in this particular program for , I kid you not, YEARS. And here I was, brand new, fresh out of (and still) training, ready to take on my first classes. I COULD NOT disappoint!
So how did I squash those nerves? I channeled my inner Richard Simmons. I’m serious! He’s excited. He’s enthusiastic. With those incredibly short shorts and glitter shirts, clearly he’s confident. And when you are excited, the people around you get excited. And when you are enthusiastic, your enthusiasm spreads. And most importantly, when you are confident, you look like you know what you are doing, haha!
And though the butterflies in my stomach were flapping their wings like crazy, I never let them show. Instead, I had a blast. I didn’t have to pretend, I thoroughly, absolutely enjoyed myself. And while as an instructor I still have a lot to learn, and a lot of room for improvement, I left each class feeling so incredibly excited to be doing something I LOVE. To be sharing the passion I have for fitness with others, and hopefully spreading that enthusiasm.
I have a bucket list of things I want to do and see in my lifetime. Finish an Ironman. Run a marathon in every state. Watch a baby being born (mine don’t count). Visit (not climb, but maybe that marathon from basecamp down) Everest. And right up there near the top, I kid you not, is meet Richard Simmons. His enthusiasm for fitness and getting people healthy is downright inspiring, as are his efforts to fight childhood obesity and ensure that physical education programs are not taken out of our children’s educations.
See? He’s not all aerobics and sequins!
