I quit drinking milk in November of 2010, and haven’t looked back. I’ll spare you the vivid details as to why I gave cow’s milk cold turkey, but lets just say that I read an article, and whether or true or not, the facts presented to me were enough to make my stomach turn. Logical or not, one cannot ignore the overpowering affects of a queasy stomach, so I quit drinking milk.
Having grown up eating huge bowls of cereal for breakfast and drinking a tall glass of cold milk with dinner every night, milk had clearly become a staple in my life. Giving it up cold turkey was a huge shock to my diet and daily routine. What would I put in my smoothies? What would I pour over my cereal? There was now a hole in my diet that needed some sort of replacement.
It was around this time in my sheltered food life that I learned that there is such a thing as plant based milks. Soy, rice, almond, coconut, cashew…the possibilities were endless. And the good news was that my days of cereal and smoothies didn’t have to end simply because I gave up cows milk.
Years later I would fall in love with a vegetarian and eventually convert to a plant based diet myself. Among various staples in our refrigerator, such as leafy greens, chia seeds, and nutritional yeast would be a half gallon of plant or nut milk, such as Silk brand soymilk. In fact, soy as a whole has become a frequent swap for things I once ate as a meat eater. Salted edamame as a snack instead of chips or French fries. As a vegetarian who eats soy on occasion, I often receive questions from people asking if I’m concerned about much of the controversy surrounding soy. My answer: no. Much research has been done regarding any possible negative health concerns surrounding soy consumption, and the consensus is that as with anything in our diets, moderation is key.
