Step one: Pick your race.
Pick your race, convince yourself you are going to do it, then slowly hint at it to your family and friends. Judge the level of perceived “crazy” as you prepare them for the official announcement. Let them think you are planning the 50k…yeah, sure 31.07 miles sounds fun *coughcoughIwant50milescough* oh excuse me, I think I’m coming down with something. Ahem.
Find a training plan. Write down the training plan everywhere you can see it. Your planner. Your wall calendar. Hang a copy over your bed.
Know in your heart that even though things haven’t worked out in the past with other “plans” and intentions, you want this one. Bad. The past doesn’t matter anymore.
Smile at the doubters and naysayers. What does it matter to them, anyways? They don’t know the reasons why I failed…they don’t know the reasons why this time, I will succeed.
Believe in yourself. Run your heart out. (but only 33 miles this week, training plan is boss).
And brace yourself…it’s going to be a long, painful, rewarding journey…
