Back to business as usual here at RFC with more adventures on the horizon. The past two years in a row I have been invited by Men’s Health Urbanathlon to be a guest blogger and attend one of their races. Unfortunately, for the past two years in a row, I’ve had some last minute issues arise preventing my attendance. So we are going with the “third times a charm” well known fact of life, and I’m GOING to make it to the NYC Urbanathlon this year.
Men’s Health Urbanathlon… The short:
a) Not just for men. Don’t let the name fool you.
b) Paved. A change of pace from your typical muddy obstacle race, a great OCR stepping stone for the traditional road running world.
c) Obstacles. Because why simply run when you can climb over things? The world was not meant to be flat.
d) No, I never get tired of these races.
2014 marks the 9th annual Men’s Health URBANATHLON series, celebrating the Men’s Health work hard, play hard mentality. With the catch line of “redefine your finish line”, the URBANATHLON challenges competitors to set new personal standards for what it means to be fit. This year, URBANATHLON is offering two distances of races:
Classic Distance: 10 – 12 miles, with 14 obstacles. Seriously, a dream come true…for me. Your standard, paved, nearly half marathon run through New York City (or Chicago or San Francisco) with obstacles to break up the monotony of long distance running. Get your GPS watches ready!
Sprint Distance: 3 – 5 miles, with 7 obstacles. This is the PERFECT event for first time obstacle racers who want to give the world of OCR a shot…without getting absolutely covered in mud or hiking up and down thousands of feet of ski slope elevation.
Obstacles in both distances include your standard OCR classics, such as monkey bars, cargo nets, and “over/under/through” walls, and then some unique urban twists on obstacles, such as climbing OVER taxi cabs and school buses.
A video recap of the 2013 series for those of you (like me) who like visuals:

Have you done an Urbanathlon (share your review link in comments below!)? If you are strictly a road runner, would you be more inclined to do an OCR like this…no mud, barbed wire, or electrocution involved? Will I see you in NYC??
